BactiSense: thermal identification of bacteria and viability testing

We have invented a platform for the selective detection of bacteria, based on a low-cost and user-friendly sensing principle. Our device monitors the propagation of a thermal wave through a synthetic cell receptor layer by means of two thermometers, an adjustable heat source and a temperature control unit (total cost price +/- 1000 Euro). In doing so the device proved to be capable of differentiating between up to nine different bacterial species in a sensitive and selective manner. In addition, bacterial viability could be assessed faithfully.
